Tanzil: Jurnal Studi Al-Quran is a peer-reviewed academic journal published by Sekolah Tinggi Agama Islam Sadra, Jakarta. The journal provides a scholarly platform for critical, analytical, and methodologically grounded studies in Qur’anic studies, engaging both classical and contemporary discourses from diverse intellectual traditions, Eastern and Western. The journal aims to contribute to the development of theoretical, methodological, and practical discussions in Qur’anic studies through original research, literature-based studies, and critical book reviews.

Scope and Focus

Tanzil: Jurnal Studi Al-Quran welcomes scholarly manuscripts that contribute to the field of Qur’anic Studies and Tafsir, including but not limited to:

1. Qur’anic Studies and Exegesis (Tafsir).
2. Methodologies of Qur’an and Tafsir Studies.
3. Classical and Contemporary Qur’anic Interpretation.
4. Tafsir Nusantara (Archipelagic Qur’anic Interpretation).
5. Living Qur’an Studies.
6. Qur’anic Hermeneutics.
7. The Qur’an and Social, Cultural, and Ethical Issues.
8. The Qur’an and Science.
9. Critical studies of figures and intellectual trends in Qur’anic studies; and
10. Thematic (Maudhu‘i) Studies of the Qur’an.

Contributions from interdisciplinary perspectives are welcome, provided that the discussion remains firmly grounded in Qur’anic Studies and Tafsir and employs rigorous scholarly methods.

Originality and Submission

1. Manuscripts must be original scholarly works and must not have been published elsewhere or be under consideration for publication in another journal.
2. Manuscripts must be free from plagiarism and other forms of academic misconduct.
3. Manuscripts must be submitted through the Tanzil online submission system.
4. Manuscripts must be submitted in Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx) format. PDF files are not accepted for submission.
5. Authors must use the official Tanzil: Jurnal Studi Al-Quran template.
6. A maximum of five authors may be listed for each manuscript.
7. Authors whose articles were published in the most recent issue of Tanzil or whose manuscripts are currently under consideration for the upcoming issue are not eligible to submit a new manuscript during the current submission period.

Language

Manuscripts must be written in standard American English (US English) and follow accepted academic writing conventions.

Title

1. The title must be written in English.
2. The title must be short, clear, informative, and relevant to the research.
3. The title must not exceed 20 words.
4. The title must clearly indicate a focus on Qur’anic Studies and/or Tafsir, whether through a theoretical, methodological, exegetical, or interpretive problem, concept, or figure.
5. The title should reflect the main research problem, topic, theory, concept, figure, phenomenon, or issue examined in the manuscript.

Authors and Affiliation

1. Provide the full name of each author without academic degrees or professional titles.
2. A maximum of five authors is permitted.
3. Provide only the name of the institution, without department, study program, or faculty.
4. Authors affiliated with an institution are required to use their official institutional email address as the corresponding contact whenever available.
5. Personal email addresses may only be used when an official institutional email address is not available.

International Co-authorship

Manuscripts involving authors affiliated with institutions in different countries must be accompanied by a completed and signed International Co-authorship Declaration and Verification Form.

The form must be signed by all listed authors and uploaded as a supporting document (Additional File) during manuscript submission.

Abstract

1. The manuscript must contain an English abstract and an Indonesian abstract.
2. Each abstract must contain 200–250 words.
3. The abstract must be written in one paragraph and use single spacing.
4. The abstract must briefly include:
   • Background – a brief description of the research problem.
   • Study Objectives – the objectives of the research.
   • Method – a brief description of the method, approach, and theoretical framework applied.
   • Results – the main findings of the article.
   • Conclusion – the main conclusion or interpretation.
5. The abstract should be concise and should not contain citations.

Keywords

1. Provide 3–5 keywords in both English and Indonesian.
2. Keywords should consist of important terms directly related to the research.
3. Keywords must be arranged in alphabetical order.

Manuscript Structure

Manuscripts must follow the structure and formatting provided in the official Tanzil: Jurnal Studi Al-Quran template. Authors should not create or apply an independent article structure that differs from the template.

The manuscript generally consists of:

1. Title

9. Research Discussion with appropriate subheadings

Discussion Structure

The term “Discussion” in the manuscript structure does not indicate that authors should use “Discussion” as the title of a section. Instead, after the Introduction, authors should directly use specific and informative subheadings that reflect the focus, problems, themes, theories, approaches, or aspects analyzed in the research.

The title of the discussion should be used to detail and focus the research discussion. For example, the Tanzil template provides the following discussion title:

Subheadings may be further divided into relevant subtitles or sub-subheadings when necessary, following the pattern and formatting demonstrated in the official Tanzil template.

Authors are not required to create a separate “Discussion” section and should not design an independent manuscript structure. The structure, heading hierarchy, and formatting must follow the official Tanzil template.

Authors who are uncertain about how to organize their manuscript are encouraged to consult the official Tanzil: Jurnal Studi Al-Quran template and examine the structure of articles that have already been published in Tanzil: Jurnal Studi Al-Quran through the journal's OJS platform.

Published articles may serve as a practical reference for understanding how titles, headings, subheadings, discussion sections, and the overall manuscript structure are organized in Tanzil. However, authors must ensure that the content and structure remain appropriate to their own research topic and argument.

Introduction

The Introduction should contain:

1. The background and research problem.
2. The significance of the research.
3. The research objectives.
4. Relevant literature and previous studies.
5. The current state of knowledge or research gap.
6. The research hypothesis, where applicable.

At the end of the Introduction, authors must clearly state the research method and/or approach used in the research or writing of the manuscript in no more than two paragraphs. The method/approach should briefly explain the type of research, approach, sources or data examined, and analytical framework or theory employed, as relevant to the study.

Length and Formatting

1. The manuscript must contain 15–25 pages, excluding the References section.
2. Authors must use the official Tanzil: Jurnal Studi Al-Quran template.
3. The main text uses EB Garamond, with formatting and spacing following the official template.
4. The main body of the manuscript generally uses 12-point font and 1.15 spacing, unless otherwise specified in the template.
5. Discussion headings and subheadings must follow the formatting provided in the official template.
6. Manuscripts must be written in standard American English (US English).
7. Authors must follow the font, spacing, heading, and other formatting specifications provided in the official template.

Citations and Citation Style

1. Tanzil: Jurnal Studi Al-Quran follows the Chicago Manual of Style (CMS), 18th edition, Author-Date system.
2. In-text citations must include the page number when referring to or quoting a specific passage.

1. Footnotes should not be used for bibliographical citations.
2. Authors are strongly encouraged to use Zotero, Mendeley, or another reference-management application.

Tables, Figures, and Illustrations

1. Tables and figures must be relevant to and support the research.
2. Images or illustrations should only be included when they support or constitute research data.
3. Irrelevant images or illustrations should not be included.
4. The title and serial number of a table must be placed above the table.
5. Figure or chart descriptions must be placed below the figure or chart.
6. Sources must be provided when tables, figures, or illustrations are taken from references.
7. Tables should not be formatted using full borders.

Arabic Terms and Transliteration

1. Arabic terms should preferably be presented using the Latin alphabet according to the Tanzil Transliteration Guidelines.
2. Arabic and Latin terms may be presented together when necessary.
3. Authors must consistently follow the transliteration system adopted by Tanzil: Jurnal Studi Al-Quran.

Qur'anic Verses and Hadith

1. When Qur’anic verses are cited but are not the primary object of study, authors should provide the translation only.
2. When a Qur’anic verse is the primary object of analysis, the original Arabic text should be included using LPMQ Isep Misbah font, size 12, as specified in the official Tanzil: Jurnal Studi Al-Quran template.
3. When Arabic hadith or other Arabic texts constitute the main object of study, the original Arabic text should use Traditional Arabic font, size 14, as specified in the official Tanzil template.
4. Authors must follow the formatting, font, and presentation of Qur’anic verses and Arabic texts provided in the official Tanzil template.
5. Quotations or references to hadith must include adequate bibliographical information, including the author's name, book title, volume, hadith number, place of publication, publisher, year of publication, and page number, where applicable.

Conclusion

The Conclusion should clearly answer the research problem and summarize the principal findings and interpretation of the study.

Recommendations or suggestions may be included where appropriate. The Conclusion should be written in 2–3 paragraphs and should not be presented as a numbered or bulleted list.

References

1. All works cited in the manuscript must appear in the References section, and all references listed must be cited in the manuscript.

2. References must be arranged alphabetically according to CMS 18 Author-Date.

3. Authors may cite various types of relevant scholarly sources, including journal articles, books, classical and contemporary Qur’anic and Islamic texts, book chapters, theses or dissertations, websites, primary sources, and other appropriate academic references. However, at least 80% of all references must be scholarly journal articles.

4. The reference list must contain at least 30 scholarly journal articles published within the most recent 10 years, calculated based on the publication year of the Tanzil: Jurnal Studi Al-Quran issue to which the manuscript is submitted. For example, for an issue published in 2026, the relevant period is 2017–2026; for an issue published in 2027, it is 2018–2027.

5. The requirement of 30 journal articles is a minimum requirement. Authors are strongly encouraged to cite more than 30 relevant journal articles, particularly those published in reputable and internationally indexed journals, such as journals indexed in Scopus or Web of Science, where relevant and available.

6. Self-citations should not be excessive. Authors are strongly encouraged to limit self-citations to a maximum of four publications in which the author is listed as an author, including co-authored publications.

7. Non-Gregorian publication years, such as Hijri years, must be converted to the Gregorian calendar.

8. Names beginning with the label “Al-” should be alphabetized according to the name or word following “Al-”, in accordance with the Tanzil reference style.

9. Authors are strongly encouraged to use Zotero, Mendeley, or another reference-management application to facilitate the preparation of the reference list.

Final Submission Checklist

Before submitting a manuscript, authors should ensure that:

1. The manuscript falls within the scope of Tanzil: Jurnal Studi Al-Quran, particularly Qur’anic Studies and Tafsir.
2. The title is no more than 20 words and clearly reflects a focus on Qur’anic Studies and/or Tafsir.
3. The manuscript is written in standard American English (US English).
4. The manuscript is 15–25 pages, excluding the References section.
5. The English and Indonesian abstracts each contain 200–250 words and include Background, Study Objectives, Method, Results, and Conclusion.
6. There are 3–5 keywords in both English and Indonesian, arranged alphabetically.
7. The manuscript does not use bibliographical footnotes.
8. Citations follow CMS 18 Author-Date and include page numbers where applicable.
9. The reference list contains at least 30 scholarly journal articles published within the most recent 10 years, calculated based on the publication year of the Tanzil issue to which the manuscript is submitted.
10. At least 80% of all references are scholarly journal articles; the remaining references may consist of books, classical and contemporary Islamic texts, book chapters, theses or dissertations, websites, primary sources, and other relevant academic sources.
11. Authors are strongly encouraged to cite relevant articles from reputable and internationally indexed journals.
12. Self-citations do not exceed four publications in which the author is listed as an author, including co-authored publications.
13. Arabic terms and texts follow the Tanzil Transliteration Guidelines.
14. Qur’anic verses and Arabic texts follow the font, formatting, and presentation requirements specified in the official Tanzil template, including the use of LPMQ Isep Misbah for Qur’anic verses when required.
15. The official Tanzil: Jurnal Studi Al-Quran template has been used.
16. The manuscript is submitted in Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx) format.
